Secrets of the Sand- #WDYS

These mysteries, secrets and lies
Lay buried in the sands of time
Await their moment to rise.

Death, trailing in the shadowed disguise
Judges our paths begrime
These mysteries, secrets and lies.

Jewels, gems and most prized dimes
That men sought, lost to torrid clime
Await their moment to rise.

Broiling, the land where water dries
Mirages, they make you see rime
These mysteries, secrets and lies.

Those eras of allies and assize
That we’d thought lost to change’s chime
Await their moment to rise.

Our deeds through footprints incise
The desert has accrued in its lifetime
These mysteries, secrets and lies
Await their moment to rise.

This is my first attempt at a villanelle. Inspired by Aashi (of Falling upwards), whose villanelles are simply beautiful.
A villanelle is a fixed-form poem consisting of five tercets and a quatrain and also follows a specific rhyme scheme using only two different sounds. There are 19 lines in total and follows a rhyme scheme of ABA ABA ABA ABA ABA ABAA. In a villanelle, two different lines repeat throughout the poem; where first line recurs as lines 6, 12, and 18, and the third line recurs as lines 9, 15, and 19.

Written for Sadje’s What Do You See #46. Does this picture inspire you to write something?
